She Says: Pre-Eclampsia that Changed Everything

In a single day, my pregnancy life was turned upside down.. I tried to recall my experience on that day:

My 30th week is finally here and I was so excited to see my gynae for the usual check-up. I always look forward to my gynae appointment because I get a peek of the little creature inside my tummy through the ultrasound.

The usual routine check seems so normal, until I noticed my urine test flashes an unusual color according to the chart. From then, my gynea start to notice rising blood pressure and the protein in the urine. The ultrasound that she did shows that the baby is on the small side. My water retention seems to be worsened as well. Everything points to a condition in pregnancy called Pre-Eclampsia.

Pre-eclampsia is a condition that affects some pregnant women usually during the second half of pregnancy (from around 20 weeks onward)
Women with pre-eclampsia have high blood pressure, fluid retention (oedema) and protein in the urine (proteinuria). If it’s not treated, it can lead to serious complications.
In the unborn baby, pre-eclampsia can cause growth problems.
.
Although the exact cause of pre-eclampsia is not known, it is thought to occur when there is a problem with the placenta (the organ that links the baby’s blood supply to the mother’s).
Pregnant women with pre-eclampsia may not realise they have it. Pre-eclampsia is usually diagnosed during routine antenatal appointments.
Mild pre-eclampsia can be monitored with blood pressure and urine tests at regular antenatal appointments and usually disappears soon after the birth. Severe pre-eclampsia may need to be monitored in hospital.

Mine is categorized as severe Pre-Eclampsia because the amount of protein in my urine is very high. When my gynae told me that I have to be warded as soon as possible, I started to panic. This can’t be happening, my pregnancy is still in the 30th week! Unfortunately, that day Winston have to work on Saturday in some remote area. Tearfully, I alerted him about the situation.
I wasn’t prepared for such a threat to my pregnancy that I broke down in tears in her office.

My gynae, Dr Kang Wee, told us the possibility of the outcome, the baby will be premature and she has to go to NICU and it can cost us 40k-50k if we decided to be warded in Mount Alvernia (the hospital where my gynae practices). Dr Kang Wee used to practice in KK Hospital for 20 years, she suggested to be transferred there. As the biggest and most advanced hospital dealing with woman and children in Singapore, KKH sounds like a better plan for us, not to mentioned that it’s a government structured hospital. Singapore’s public health sector rates among the best in the world and they offer subsidized rates for citizen and PR.

That Saturday 14 July 2012, we checked ourselves to KKH.. and for the next 3 weeks it became the location of my story…

She says: Introducing Diary & Design: A Wedding Story

After the success of our wedding, we received a lot of compliments and requests regarding wedding planning and design. It has always been my secret desire to cultivate my love for wedding design to a concrete plan. So, when Lily, my wedding coordinator asked to meet up to talk about the possibility to partner, I couldn’t feel more happy! This is the moment I’m waiting for!

It feels so right and so natural for us to plan & design wedding. I am always championing a life of passion and purpose. There is a purpose of why we are wired this way. Why we are born with certain tendency or talents. Some people are naturally drawn to numbers, sports, music, biology, or some cool ones, like design *haha*. I happened to be born with a love for art and design. I was an aesthetically-inclined child with tons of imagination. My mom can testified to that. She had to repaint the wall many times because of my constant sketching.

So now I know why I love and is able to do art and design, so one day I could help many brides to have a beautiful, memorable and stress-free wedding. Man, that was some revelation!

Anyway, enough of childhood flashback, now the future is in front of us. We are officially launching Diary & Design: A Wedding Story today!

Diary & Design Wedding combines the individual strength of a well-designed and well-organized wedding. You get the best of both worlds. Neither design or coordination becomes secondary. Both are given the same priority and full attention. This partnership provides assurance that all of your design and coordination needs are covered, so that you can relax and enjoy your big day.

We already drafted the services and packages to suit your preferences. We even have the Design-It-Yourself packages to help you materialize the ideas you are dying to impose but have no idea how to!  *Gosh, I wish I had that privilege when I planned mine*

She says: Make Up Trial and Error

I just went for my 2nd make up trial in Di Gio after the first one turned out to be less than desirable. I think it was my fault, because I didn’t brief him properly. My Taiwan pre-wedding make up really matched up my taste without me saying anything. So drawing from that experience, I just told the make up artist I want a natural make up. Turns out, it’s too natural that I like my daily make up better than this one! My eyes still look as small as they really are. Chris, the make up artist said it’s because he didn’t put the fake lashes for make up trial. Because I don’t want to hurt anybody’s feeling and everybody in Di Gio gave nice comments, I conformed with it.

It didn’t last very long till I realized, it wasn’t what I wanted. One of bridesmaids commented that make up is supposed to make the bride stands out not blend in. I couldn’t agree more.

So, I asked for another make up trial. This time I came prepared I showed him what is exactly the make up and hairdo I want through pictures and my make up from Taiwan. He was nice enough to do the second one and put the fake lashes, although it will cost me $15. We had a good session, and this time it’s really trial and error. Turns out, previously my idea of natural make up was not in sync with Chris’. I don’t like colored eye shadow and just want my eyes to be BIG. that’s all.

So here are my references.

Outdoor Make Up

Outdoor Hairdo

Retro feel with the hump and white satin ribbon. I like!

Banquet Make Up

I love the dramatic eyes of 1950s. Since my banquet is inspired by Breakfast at Tiffany’s, I think it’s just right to have the vintage-ish look for the banquet.

Thumbs up to Josephine, Casey and Chris who are so patient with me. I am one complicated bride! I think by now, they know my pattern. I won’t state my dislike on the spot, but I will think about it and will drop the bomb few days after that. Oops!

At last, I feel confident with my MUA. That’s very important, brides-to-be. Don’t just give in but press on to whatever you like! You deserve the best!

She says: 3 more weeks to go- Intensive Exercise

Last week was a super-packed week for me and Winston because we are involved in the historical Asia Conference 2010 for the whole 5 days starting Wed to Sun. It’s the biggest Christian conference in Asia, with powerful speakers like David Cho Yonggi (South Korea), pastor of the largest church in the world (700,000 members), Reinhard Bonnke (Germany) who drew 55 millions souls for Christ in 10 years in Africa alone, #1 Religious Leader in New York City and counsellor to Mayor Bloomberg, Dr AR Bernard, and many other great speakers. We even befriended a pastor who hails from Brazil that came alone and we ” adopted” him into our group.

So much for the excitement last week, now is the time to back on the track for wedding prep. 3 weeks to go!! I need to gear up my diet and exercise for the last lap.

I followed an effective exercise from Junebug Weddings to get a toned arm..

For Strapless gown

Row

The bent over row is one of the best exercises to tone your back and shoulders. Stand with legs at a comfortable distance apart (about shoulder width) with a dumbbell in each hand, palms facing the body. Bend over about 45 degrees, keeping your back straight as you would for a dead lift or squat. Dumbbells should be kept at about shoulder width apart. Engage your core, keep your back straight and lift the weights to the bottom of your rib cage, squeezing your shoulder blades together. Stay bent over until all repetitions are complete. Do three sets of 20 repetitions. For best results, use dumbbells that are challenging enough where you can barely eek out that 20th repetition.

L’ Lateral Raises

If you want to add shape and definition to the “rounded cap” on your shoulders (your deltoids), look no further than ‘L’ lateral raises! Grab a dumbbell in each hand and stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. It is beneficial to stand in front of a mirror to monitor your technique. Hold your left dumbbell with your palm facing the front of your left thigh and your right dumbbell facing the outside of your right thigh. Keeping a slight bend in your elbow, raise both arms up to shoulder level, so if someone were above you looking down, your arms would be in an ‘L’ shape. Alternate positions on each side, returning to the starting position in between, and when your arms are up bring your elbows higher than your wrists so that the thumb-side is lower than your pinky-side. Picture pouring out a glass of water, with the dumbbell as your cup. This will ensure that extra squeeze in your side deltoids. Your back should remain straight and your lower body should be stationary. I recommend using 3-8 lbs dumbbells and completing 3 sets of 15-20 repetitions on each side.

Halter

Shoulder Press

The dumbbells should be held at shoulder height with your palms facing out. Next, push the dumbbells over your head until your arms are almost completely straight and the dumbbells are touching. At the top of the movement do not lock your elbows. Slowly lower your dumbbells back to the starting position. Keep your abs and your lower back tight to support your spine as you push the dumbbells above your head. I recommend using 8-15 lbs and completing three sets of 20 repetitions.

Hammer Curl

The hammer curl is a variation of the classic biceps curl. This is one of my favorite arm exercises because they are gentler on your wrists and are more effective as they keep the tension in your biceps muscles the entire time. Hold two dumbbells and stand straight up with your arms by your side and your palms facing towards your body. Engage your core and lightly squeeze your shoulder blades together as you raise your arms until your hands are almost to your shoulders. Pause at the top of the hammer curl and squeeze your bicep muscles, then slowly lower back down to the starting position. I recommend using 8-15 lbs and completing three sets of 20 repetitions.

Asymmetrical

Yoga push-up

These are killers and will create muscle definition after only a few days of doing them! Start in a plank position- place the hands directly below the shoulders with fingers splayed wide, so all the weight is not on the wrist, but spread out through the fingers. Keep the knees straight and the heels pressing back, feet flexed. Gently squeeze your buns and draw your belly button in. Keep the hips in line with the body and be aware of any sinking. Look forward about 45 degrees. Every part of the body is solid, light and connected. Inhale while lowering your body and exhale while rising. The elbows should be facing behind you and your ribcage should glide alongside your arms. Stop when your elbows are at 90 degrees and hover for 2 seconds. Stay solid throughout as you push back up to the starting position. If you’re doing these for the first time, lower less than halfway down. As you get stronger your range will improve. Never land on the ground, and do a modified version on your knees if needed. Do three sets of 10-20 repetitions (add more reps each week).

Triceps Kickback

The kickback isolates the triceps so they instantly pop! Hold a dumbbell in each hand, bend your knees and bend from the hip so your torso is parallel with the floor. Squeezing your shoulder blades together, bring your shoulders back and down away from your ears. Point your elbows as high as you can towards the ceiling while leaving the dumbbell hanging by your ribcage. Slowly extend your arms until they are straight behind you, in-line with your torso (do not change the position of your elbow). Pause for a second, then lower back to starting position, elbows at 90 degrees. Your upper arm and elbow should not move at all during the entire set. If you can’t do a complete set without moving your upper arm/elbow, use a lighter dumbbell. I recommend 8-15 lbs dumbbells and three sets of 20 repetitions.

I followed these work-out for 2 months now, although it’s not regimental, I begin to see the result.. Just not too much, because I don’t want to be too muscular, and become (as Winston says) “King Kong Barbie”.

She says: Collagen Secret

Now that we have only a few weeks left to our wedding, it’s not too late to do something extra to look effortlessly gorgeous on the actual day. Convinced by bride’s forum and the review, I started to consume Collagen HTC Tense Up from Fancl. It is so popular among the Singaporean brides that I bought a month supply! It’s not cheap but if the result matches the review, I guess it’s worth the money.

I bought my supply from people that fly to Japan regularly, as it is much cheaper in Japan than in Singapore. Especially the HTC powder. Can save up to 50 % from Spore price!

I’ll let you know the result after my wedding. See how many compliment I received! Haha!

She says: The Beauty Portion

1.5 months to go and it’s time to do some serious pampering and beautification. There are many types of bride depending on their area of interest. Some put high priority on the gown, makeup, food, ang bao… mine will be obviously on the stationery and the decor.

I am a visual-based presentation bride. Surprisingly, I took less care on my look as a bride compare to how the venue looks. I am not a big fan of makeup. It is deemed an absolute necessity for me daily, but only the natural look. I love the Taiwanese style of make up on my photo shoot. As well as my nails, I like them clean and classy. No nail art for me!

I am still searching for nail bar for my manicure and pedicure on the actual day. I am quite helpless on this part, so if you have any suggestion, please feel free to shout it out to me!

I need help!

Anyway, I decided to try a spa package. Spa industry is one fierce sales machine! They continue to offer and persuade me to top up or to take some additional package, even after I signed up for 6 sessions. Anyway I signed up with Body Contour. I don’t know why I signed up, but I should say the sales consultant is very convincing.

I always love massage and pampering. Wedding is one valid reason to do them on the regular basis. Javanese ladies used to do an extensive beauty regime for 6 months to 1 year. They call it “lulur”, so the skin glows on the actual day. My mom and I used to call in the masseur to do lulur at home. Manicure, pedicure, creambath, massage are so cheap in Jakarta. Probably cost more than half price compare to Singapore.
