She says: 3 more weeks to go- Intensive Exercise

Last week was a super-packed week for me and Winston because we are involved in the historical Asia Conference 2010 for the whole 5 days starting Wed to Sun. It’s the biggest Christian conference in Asia, with powerful speakers like David Cho Yonggi (South Korea), pastor of the largest church in the world (700,000 members), Reinhard Bonnke (Germany) who drew 55 millions souls for Christ in 10 years in Africa alone, #1 Religious Leader in New York City and counsellor to Mayor Bloomberg, Dr AR Bernard, and many other great speakers. We even befriended a pastor who hails from Brazil that came alone and we ” adopted” him into our group.

So much for the excitement last week, now is the time to back on the track for wedding prep. 3 weeks to go!! I need to gear up my diet and exercise for the last lap.

I followed an effective exercise from Junebug Weddings to get a toned arm..

For Strapless gown

Row

The bent over row is one of the best exercises to tone your back and shoulders. Stand with legs at a comfortable distance apart (about shoulder width) with a dumbbell in each hand, palms facing the body. Bend over about 45 degrees, keeping your back straight as you would for a dead lift or squat. Dumbbells should be kept at about shoulder width apart. Engage your core, keep your back straight and lift the weights to the bottom of your rib cage, squeezing your shoulder blades together. Stay bent over until all repetitions are complete. Do three sets of 20 repetitions. For best results, use dumbbells that are challenging enough where you can barely eek out that 20th repetition.

L’ Lateral Raises

If you want to add shape and definition to the “rounded cap” on your shoulders (your deltoids), look no further than ‘L’ lateral raises! Grab a dumbbell in each hand and stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. It is beneficial to stand in front of a mirror to monitor your technique. Hold your left dumbbell with your palm facing the front of your left thigh and your right dumbbell facing the outside of your right thigh. Keeping a slight bend in your elbow, raise both arms up to shoulder level, so if someone were above you looking down, your arms would be in an ‘L’ shape. Alternate positions on each side, returning to the starting position in between, and when your arms are up bring your elbows higher than your wrists so that the thumb-side is lower than your pinky-side. Picture pouring out a glass of water, with the dumbbell as your cup. This will ensure that extra squeeze in your side deltoids. Your back should remain straight and your lower body should be stationary. I recommend using 3-8 lbs dumbbells and completing 3 sets of 15-20 repetitions on each side.

Halter

Shoulder Press

The dumbbells should be held at shoulder height with your palms facing out. Next, push the dumbbells over your head until your arms are almost completely straight and the dumbbells are touching. At the top of the movement do not lock your elbows. Slowly lower your dumbbells back to the starting position. Keep your abs and your lower back tight to support your spine as you push the dumbbells above your head. I recommend using 8-15 lbs and completing three sets of 20 repetitions.

Hammer Curl

The hammer curl is a variation of the classic biceps curl. This is one of my favorite arm exercises because they are gentler on your wrists and are more effective as they keep the tension in your biceps muscles the entire time. Hold two dumbbells and stand straight up with your arms by your side and your palms facing towards your body. Engage your core and lightly squeeze your shoulder blades together as you raise your arms until your hands are almost to your shoulders. Pause at the top of the hammer curl and squeeze your bicep muscles, then slowly lower back down to the starting position. I recommend using 8-15 lbs and completing three sets of 20 repetitions.

Asymmetrical

Yoga push-up

These are killers and will create muscle definition after only a few days of doing them! Start in a plank position- place the hands directly below the shoulders with fingers splayed wide, so all the weight is not on the wrist, but spread out through the fingers. Keep the knees straight and the heels pressing back, feet flexed. Gently squeeze your buns and draw your belly button in. Keep the hips in line with the body and be aware of any sinking. Look forward about 45 degrees. Every part of the body is solid, light and connected. Inhale while lowering your body and exhale while rising. The elbows should be facing behind you and your ribcage should glide alongside your arms. Stop when your elbows are at 90 degrees and hover for 2 seconds. Stay solid throughout as you push back up to the starting position. If you’re doing these for the first time, lower less than halfway down. As you get stronger your range will improve. Never land on the ground, and do a modified version on your knees if needed. Do three sets of 10-20 repetitions (add more reps each week).

Triceps Kickback

The kickback isolates the triceps so they instantly pop! Hold a dumbbell in each hand, bend your knees and bend from the hip so your torso is parallel with the floor. Squeezing your shoulder blades together, bring your shoulders back and down away from your ears. Point your elbows as high as you can towards the ceiling while leaving the dumbbell hanging by your ribcage. Slowly extend your arms until they are straight behind you, in-line with your torso (do not change the position of your elbow). Pause for a second, then lower back to starting position, elbows at 90 degrees. Your upper arm and elbow should not move at all during the entire set. If you can’t do a complete set without moving your upper arm/elbow, use a lighter dumbbell. I recommend 8-15 lbs dumbbells and three sets of 20 repetitions.

I followed these work-out for 2 months now, although it’s not regimental, I begin to see the result.. Just not too much, because I don’t want to be too muscular, and become (as Winston says) “King Kong Barbie”.

She says: Collagen Secret

Now that we have only a few weeks left to our wedding, it’s not too late to do something extra to look effortlessly gorgeous on the actual day. Convinced by bride’s forum and the review, I started to consume Collagen HTC Tense Up from Fancl. It is so popular among the Singaporean brides that I bought a month supply! It’s not cheap but if the result matches the review, I guess it’s worth the money.

I bought my supply from people that fly to Japan regularly, as it is much cheaper in Japan than in Singapore. Especially the HTC powder. Can save up to 50 % from Spore price!

I’ll let you know the result after my wedding. See how many compliment I received! Haha!

She says: Things to do (still)

4 weeks to go and we still need to settle some things. Most of these things are more our “wants” than “needs”, and most of the stuff is for our outdoor wedding. We are really enjoying this wedding, don’t we? *grin*

  • Booklet for Matrimony
  • Cotton Candy Machine
  • Backdrop for Photobooth
  • Props for photobooth
  • Cupcakes
  • Lanterns for cocktail table
  • Special montage
  • Sparkles for send offs

Pure indulgence! Wedding is only once in lifetime, so if it’s possible strive for whatever you want!

*provided the budget allowed, ours already burst by the way*

She says: 1 MONTH to go!

It’s 1 month to go!! Haven’t really sink in me yet that I’m getting married in 1 month. All the tense preparation that we had since the beginning of last year seems to vanish in the presence of the future. We are nearly done with the preparation, and sent out most of the invitations already. These are the list that we managed to tick off:

  • Venue ( Matrimony & Banquet)
  • Venue Decor & Flower
  • Programs + Coordination
  • Photography & Videography
  • Pre-wedding Photos
  • Catering
  • Wedding Gowns & Suits
  • Make Up
  • Wedding Car + decor
  • Wedding Ring
  • Wedding Favor
  • Invitations
  • Bands & Music
  • Accommodation for Relatives
  • Bridesmaids Dresses + Groomsmen ties
  • Honeymoon
  • Montages
  • Booths: Photobooth +  Dessert Bar

That’s almost everything we need to do to pull off a wedding. Maybe left with the program booklet for matrimony, which we haven’t do yet.

I have a very useful habit of keeping journals and diaries. I started this habit since I was 13 years old and I am still keeping a journal until now. I love this habit, as I always reflect back of how I felt during certain particular events in my life. I still had them with me, except 1 diary that I burned when I had a big fight with my first boyfriend at 15 years old (so dramaaaa..).

So this wedding is no exception. I prepared a notebook when I started this preparation last April 2009. Now it’s already the second book and  almost runs out. It’s really heartwarming when I flipped the pages and saw my own hand writing listing the potential venue or florist or photographer. It shows the depth and thought involved, not just another impulsive decision.

I championed journal-keeping habit! You can look back and see how much you have grown!

She says: 1st Briefing + Craft Day

Last Saturday, Winston and I conducted our first briefing with our helpers. Started with lunch @ Domino Pizza Katong. Followed by briefing in my house and ended with the wedding craft activity. Winston gave a brief of what’s going to happen on the day. I talked about the dress code, we assigned the task to the helpers. We didn’t manage to brief each team individually since not all team members are there. So we’ll do it nearer to the date.

The craft day was a success. We managed to finish tying and decorate 300 boxes of wedding favor, did a garland (thanks to Clarissa’s brilliant idea), packed the photos for photo gallery, etc.

We are so blessed to have group of friends that were supportive. Our cell group members made up the most number of helpers, followed by my housemates (some of which are also my cell members). We have been in the same group for 8 years and counting. Some of them know me before Winston and I were together. They have seen our transformation, seen our past and our future. I am really thankful for them, for without this group of friends, I don’t think we could pull this off. Since we dot not have big budgets to hire wedding planner to do these things for us, we rely much on friends. The least we can do is to thank them publicly and give them good ang bao as much as our budget allows!

So thank you to Lily, You Chun, Eko, Clarissa, Bryan, Kevin, Eunice, Riska, Henry (Pipin), Yong Fu, Alex, Esther, James and Amanda, Genia, Mema, Red for coming to Craft Day and helping us!

Special thanks also for Yuwei who helped us prepare our wedding invites even before craft day.

I will feature our helpers soon! So readers stay tune and Helpers, be prepared!

She says: Another Balloon Inspiration – UP!

I am still searching for balloon vendors that can provide big 20″-36″ balloons with delivery. Meanwhile, I stumbled upon this super gorgeous photoshoot. It’s so out-of-this-world with their props and backdrop. I guess, it can only happened in the other part of the world.

I love the hut and the house..ughhhh…

This is the inspiration behind the shoot:

Be ready for a string of eye candy!

I went back over the weekend for my good friends’ wedding, Jesse and Lala, who have really cool prewed photos. They are really fun and crazy couple. See their prewed photos and you’ll know what I mean.

One more item from Indo wedding that we will adapt is the tradition of mass balloon release. Imagine mass of balloon floating on top of Fort Canning Park!

He says: Letter to my Wedding Guests

I am finally back… to writing one more entry… haha, will try to do a few more before the wedding. Here I am going to write a simple letter to my wedding guests. If you know you are one of the ‘fortunate’ ones, please read on.

“Dear Friend,

It is with my utmost personal pleasure to invite you to Hellen and my impending wedding on 19-20 Jun. As a guest for this wedding, there are a few things I hope you can do.

1. Get Ready to Receive the Invites!

We sincerely hope that you like it and will be excited for us as we get nearer to this important weekend!

2. Come Dressed for the Occasion!

We will be having our wedding in 2 days. Please read your invitation carefully. We have 2 invitations, so if you got a set of 2, you are invited to both event!

Day 1 (19 June 2010) is an outdoor wedding which will be romantic and possibly solemn. The dress code is Summer Chic, so come in your most colorful dressings! Don’t be too casual but at the same time, stay comfortable as the weather could be real hot (35 degrees celsius yesterday!!). We will be providing what we can to make you as comfortable and cool as possible, so do not worry. We are envisioning an outdoor garden atmosphere so let’s make it possible!

Very nice summer chic suggestions!

I know you will look great in this!!!... unless you are a dude...

Day 2 (Sunday 20 June 2010) is our banquet celebration in Conrad, so come in your formal dressings or smart casuals. (Hellen’s edit: Our banquet is inspired by Breakfast at Tiffany’s the movie, as well as the color theme: Black-White-Tiffany. So feel free to dress up in Little Black Dress or channel your Audrey Hepburn obsession here!) For the guys, formal wear is preferable. But nice looking jeans with shirt is acceptable too..

It will be a fun-filled evening for all as you walked down memory lane with us through the night.

3. Provide Your Well-Wishes through the RSVP Page!

In our blog, we have an RSVP page, so please provide your RSVP through the page by adding a comment. You can give your advance well-wishes too as we will truly appreciate that!

4. Don’t be in a Hurry to GO!!

For both days, especially on the first day, we have some surprises, so don’t be in a hurry to go!! So after our matrimony service, enjoy the sumptuous food but stick around as we have something special for you! Yes, that means YOU!

5. Smile in spite of Anything!

A lot of what we are doing is dependent on the weather so please keep us in prayers for awesome weather (no rain but not too scorching hot also!!!) In addition, no matter how much we plan, some hiccups may occur. But no worries, keep smiling! I really hope that you can enjoy yourself and keep yourself pumped up throughout the wedding for the photos and videos.

So all in all, my dear friend, I hope you can enjoy this wedding as it marks our union. When you received the invites from us, make yourself available and get ready to enjoy an atypical Singaporean wedding and have a whale of a time!

Finally a little song that I love as I prepare myself for the wedding:

Thanks and see you there!

Yours sincerely,

Winston aka Wee Kiong aka Weiqiang aka Xiao Qiang aka Ah Kiong ah….

PS: Happy Mommy Day to all!”

Countdown to Wedding Day (19-06-10): 43 days

She says: DIY Lanterns

I am pulling my hair to get the kind of lighting that I want. Initially I want to have lanterns hanging from tree to tree, it looks wonderful. However, the effort of getting it done might not be worth the effect. I still don’t get why nobody in Singapore does this, while in Jakarta or Bali it is such common items! It costs quite a bomb just for the labour of hanging the lanterns and the wires. I have to source everything myself too. I found a good lantern and LED at a bargain price in Jakarta, but the manpower fee is rather a blow.

I have to say, I am getting frustrated with the local vendors here. When they say can’t, it means nothing can be done. Period. It is quite a bureaucratic place. No back door or no sidetrack for certain thing.. or at least no one tries to make it happen.

Anyway, I am determined to get my lantern done, whether I can get it hanged or just place it on the table. IKEA lanterns are nice and cheap ($10) but I want to hang on the trees.. so a bit dangerous with the tea light candle. Don’t want to burn the tree down.

So I found a DIY tips on making your own lantern here.

Supplies for this lantern:

a. Battery operated tea light, do not use conventional tea lights (app. $1 each)
b. 2 brads ($3.00 for 100)
c. Ribbon, several inches in length
d. Strip of vellum 2.5″ by 5.25″; trim one of the long sides with decorative scissors if desired ($10.00 for 50 sheets – each sheet will easily make 5 lanterns)
e. Double stick tape

Supplies for optional embellishments:
f. Needle and thread
g. Paper flowers
h. Pin
i. Printed lette
r

Basic Directions:
1. Wrap strip of vellum around battery operated tea light, adhering with double stick tape.
2. Using brads attach length of ribbon to “lantern” to form a handle from which to hang.

Optional Embellishments:
Pinhole Monogram: Before assembling lantern, use a pin and a printed letter as a guide to punch a monogram in the vellum strip.
Flowered handle: After the lantern is assembled use a needle and thread to tack paper flowers to ribbon handle.

I think I will include this project on Craft Day!

She says: The Beauty Portion

1.5 months to go and it’s time to do some serious pampering and beautification. There are many types of bride depending on their area of interest. Some put high priority on the gown, makeup, food, ang bao… mine will be obviously on the stationery and the decor.

I am a visual-based presentation bride. Surprisingly, I took less care on my look as a bride compare to how the venue looks. I am not a big fan of makeup. It is deemed an absolute necessity for me daily, but only the natural look. I love the Taiwanese style of make up on my photo shoot. As well as my nails, I like them clean and classy. No nail art for me!

I am still searching for nail bar for my manicure and pedicure on the actual day. I am quite helpless on this part, so if you have any suggestion, please feel free to shout it out to me!

I need help!

Anyway, I decided to try a spa package. Spa industry is one fierce sales machine! They continue to offer and persuade me to top up or to take some additional package, even after I signed up for 6 sessions. Anyway I signed up with Body Contour. I don’t know why I signed up, but I should say the sales consultant is very convincing.

I always love massage and pampering. Wedding is one valid reason to do them on the regular basis. Javanese ladies used to do an extensive beauty regime for 6 months to 1 year. They call it “lulur”, so the skin glows on the actual day. My mom and I used to call in the masseur to do lulur at home. Manicure, pedicure, creambath, massage are so cheap in Jakarta. Probably cost more than half price compare to Singapore.

She says: We did it (again!)

Last weekend garage sale was pretty successful. Although the crowd was lesser compare to 2 years ago. The ones participating were also lesser, resulting in fewer friends coming.  Thank God it didn’t rain, although the sun was scorching madly. The bad news is my arms became darker and it is obviously different tone to the covered part of my arms. I tried to prevent the tan by using umbrella and sunblock, but it still has the effect! I am in panic mode now..

I am clearing my stuff before I move in to Winston’s house temporarily, while waiting for our Punggol house to be ready. Luckily I have cleared up to 8 years of my stuff in batches. We had a big garage sale 2 years ago, and subsequently involved in flea markets. I used to rent the whole apartment and share it among my sisters and friends, so it’s not easy to shrink all that into a room in Winston’s house.

Anyway, cheers for Winston, Clarissa, Bryan (and parents) and Eunice for making this garage sale possible. We managed to sell a small fridge, a 80 GB iPod Classic (a real bargain@ $60), clothes, accessories, figurines, comics, toys, bags, books, shoes, games, hats, etc. Our Filipino neighbors came early to sweep off all the good stuff, they really can sniff a good bargain.

A big shout out for You Chun, Kevin and Alex who stayed for 2 days to help us pack. Kudos to you three! Also for our friends that came and bought stuff.. Thanks!

It was fun and hopefully we can do this again!

Here are the pics..
